Choosing an advocate

Hiring a patient/medical advocate is hard for most people.  Letting someone in, outside the family or immediate circle of medical professionals is daunting.  Will an advocate really be on my side? Do what I want? Answer my questions?  The answer to all those questions is yes.  In my work as  a health and patient advocate, I am passionate about getting the work done for the client.  An advocate can quickly dissect the situation and move to help the client correct the situation.  My experience in primary care drove me to want to help clients in complex medical situations.  I did my best from my medical office but it wasn't enough.  I find insurance companies are now marketing the concept of a patient advocate but beware.  Insurance based advocates are going to steer you towards their services, doctors specialists, testing centers and generic medications.  An advocate needs to be independent to provide the optimum results.  If you hire an advocate, remember, you are the driver and the advocate is the navigator.  You make the decisions with the information gathered by the advocate.  it can make it easier for you.
