Scare Tactics by the Talk Shows
I listen to conservative talk radio shows sometimes to get an idea of what the most recent spin on a topic maybe. I am very focused now on what chatter and myths are being spread over the internet and talk radio about healthcare reform. I must say I have about a 15 minute limit before I want to call in and argue. Now that I know is useless! I was listening to
Dan Flynn on WTKKFM in Boston who was filing in for Michelle McPhee. I counted how many times he said socialism or socialist in a five minute time period. It was 6 times and each of his 2 callers used it at least once or more. He also used the word communism (a monster 10X worse than socialism!) to describe what would happen if "Obamacare" was made law. His recitation of myth was, we would have rationed care. This meant we could not pick our doctors, we would not be able to get treatment, healthcare would not be easily accessible and the government would make medical decisions. And worse of all, we would be like those countries Canada and England. Those socialist demons! One caller even said this would create the next civil war! Yikes! It was obvious to me, Mr Flynn had not read the bill nor had an understanding of the healthcare system as it exists today. Rationing exists today as per the multiple denials of care by the insurance companies. Waiting time for specialists can run up to six months. Waiting time for elective surgery can be 6-8 weeks while times for radiological procedures can be the same. Premiums are off the scale providing minimal services for many. It isn't the poor who only suffer, it is all levels of society. Mr Flynn kept stating the US has the most Nobel Prizes for Medicine than any other country, with the best medical gadgets and technology in the world and everyone comes here for treatment. I would like to inform Mr Flynn, the people who come here pay cash and get want they want with the payment. The rest of us can't get most of the high tech procedures because insurance won't pay for it. I fear these myths and half truths will convince people we don't really need reform. I shutter at the thought of healthcare remaining as it is. The insurance companies will succeed and have more control. Mr Flynn GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!
