Reflections on a Presidential Press Conference
I don't know why I thought President Obama's press conference might help reduce the healthcare reform myth machine. I was hopeful because I want healthcare reform to occur soon. Fifteen minutes of listening to talk radio, post press conference, I realized healthcare reform was in trouble. Why? The myths and lies are beginning to take hold. The lies of rationed care. We have rationed care NOW. Insurance companies decide life and death surgeries, treatments , medications and procedures. I frequently receive frantic phone calls from people needing help reversing an insurance denial that is essentially a death sentence. So rationing already exists. It won't be new. There is also great fear that a public option will create a socialist society. This concept is getting traction and creating fear in many people. I don't know how to change people because socialism is the scariest word for most Americans. It seems to me people would rather pay high premiums, go bankrupt, have unneeded procedures, be dropped for pre existing conditions, have high deductibles or coinsurance and have limited choice in doctors than listen to the facts about healthcare reform. Socialism is not on the horizon for America and no one is suggesting it. Take a moment to think if nothing changes in healthcare. For me it is chilling.
