If I Yell louder, Will Health Reform Happen?
I listened last night to a woman on talk radio express her fears of healthcare reform and not being able to get care as she aged, specifically a knee replacement. The talk show host proceeded to agree with her that under the Obama plan, she wouldn't be able to get the care. Yikes! It was such a bold faced lie! Insurance companies already deny people of all ages necessary care under the guise "standard and necessary evidence based medicine". I realize now that in this country, people are just scared of change. It really doesn't have anything to do with the facts. This country has come to accept: difficulty getting appointments, long wait times to see the doctor, fifteen minute appoints, copays, high coinsurance and deductibles, and for anything slightly complicated off to the specialists to repeat the process with no coordination of care.
I am feeling sufficiently outraged by the possibility of no healthcare reform. I am starting to think I live in a parallel universe. In my universe, people call me every day asking for help with inability to find affordable healthcare, being denied life saving treatments, outrageous insurance bills with insurance coverage, inability to understand a medical diagnosis or find the right doctor, being made to pay for treatments that didn't work or caused harm, medication errors, and no understandable recourse. People cry on the phone as their story unfolds. Maybe if I put on my sparkly red shoes, close my eyes and say"there's no place like home" all will be corrected.
I shutter at the thought of no healthcare reform. I believe it will mean more rate increases, more people being denied care for preexisting conditions and people being dropped from their insurance with no recourse. I challenge everyone who is against healthcare reform even in its basic form to acknowledge they know someone who has been denied treatment, lost their home to medical bills, can't afford insurance, has been dumped by an insurance company or gotten worse in the hospital. Then explain to me why you think , the system should continue as it exists?
